As everyone in the long stretch of our street went inside their respective houses after several minutes of blowing horns made of disposable plastic cups and counting down to officially welcome the new year, it dawned on me that it signals the start of really 'living' in 2011.
It is one thing to go out in the streets, making all sorts of noises from hooting to blowing horns to dragging cans attached to the back part of the vehicle while it's moving. It's another thing to be in the quiet and comfort of your home, enjoying delectable dishes served in the Media Noche. It's an intimate way of family bonding and yes, we can all reflect on what's in store for us in the coming 12 months. But the previous year also deserves to be given a glance before we bid it goodbye.
2010 had been a pretty good one for me, to say the least. It was a year full of changes, transitions and challenged my ability to adapt and adjust in no time. There were a lot of first times too.
I tried a very short Korean hairstyle for the first time and apparently, people were praising me coz the cut suit me well. I know it cost me five times my regular haircut budget but with compliments I was getting everyday, it's all worth it.
Seeing my peers make a graceful exit dubbed as college graduation tugged my heartstrings. I was left behind for another six weeks since I had to complete one major and one minor subject before finally earning my degree. It meant extension for my ATENEWS EICship also. A national convention was held in Bacolod for almost a week and as the only editor enrolled during that time, I took the duty of canvassing for tickets, hotels and all that. With three members under my wing, we attended the convention and I was absent in my classes. I can no longer imagine how I was able to multitask listening to the talks with a photocopy of our Philosophy of Religion in one hand. You see, I needed to study so I'll be on the same page as the class took on the same lesson by then. But the convention was truly enriching and the side trip to Cebu was fun so I got through it smoothly.
The National Elections also happened during this year. After casting the peoples vote and with the aid of technology that are PCOS machines, the country now has a different set of leaders. I am hoping for the best. May the people's vote not be a waste by malpractice and anomalies. I know that politics has always been dirty. I just hope they won't stain it more.
After all the defense and exams, I officially graduated from college with no graduation rites, no preparations, no graduation dinner, no graduation gifts, no nothing at all. I could care less, what's important for me is that I survived college after eight regular semesters and four summer classes! From a colegiala, I have now become a professional who has to pay 7 pesos minimum in a jeepney ride. I admit, sometimes, it's tempting to pay just only 6, just like the old times. :))
Then started my bum life. I rested and chilled but not really since I still had to go back to school and apply for the diploma, clearance, etc. After a month, a college friend offered me a home-based online writing job which I accepted eagerly. I wrote about hen parties (UK setting) and used spinning software. It only lasted for a month as the boss lacked the funds to continue getting my services.
I wasn't idle for long though since NSO hired me. There I had a not-so-challenging with an above-average compensation on a killer schedule. Haha. Truly, I learned to budget my time and make some sacrifices by waking up way early for my 6am duty or going home at more or less 12 in the midnight from my 3pm duty. But the people I worked with are keepers so I couldn't thank NSO enough for bringing our paths together. :)
Life after NSO meant staying in our house and having to endure all the noise, mess and a lot of chaos while our house was under renovation/repaint. It certainly bored me so I had to find ways to get out of the house. When I saw an old college classmate again and informed me of a vacant writing position in their office (which is situated in the tallest building in the metro), I applied days after and got hired. What a pity because the house repair was almost finished the time when they told me to report for duty. :( But still, I am more than thankful for the salary and more than that, I am glad for having something to be busy with. I guess sitting around the whole day with no goal in mind just doesn't sit with me well. I can feel I am shortchanging myself doing nothing.
Come Christmas season, my aunt who is now based in Japan spent her holidays here with us. Thus, on Christmas eve, everyone from my father's side gathered in our house as we had a Christmas program and gift giving session. It was good to see everyone of them for the first time. I realized I have a lot of pamangkins already. They were all so adorable! It was even better going around the place, greeting each one with a hug as our eyes were filled with tears. Truly, we are all so touched with this once in a lifetime family event. And of course, it was the best with all the tasty treats served in the Noche Buena. After that, we all slept in the house. All 31 of us, imagine!
Last night was New Year's eve. It's the first time to celebrate this special beginning with my immediate family. I am used to having my aunts and uncles around during New Year but this year is different and I love the refreshing change.
In a nutshell, I view the past year as a time when growing up is a requirement as major decisions are needed to be made. I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and give importance to my hard-earned money as well. I also learned how to relate with other people, especially those in authority, in a professional way. 2010 was truly one of the best years in my 20 years of existence.
And now, I'll say 'Hello there, 2011! Rock my world, Year of the Metal Rabbit!' :)

Pasko sa Ultro
Holidays are just few days away! I grew up loving Christmas season because I find people extra happy when this time of the year comes. It may be caused by the extra money they get as bonuses or 13 month pay coupled with the mall sales which really enable shoppers to get items up to half their price! It's a very ideal time to shop til you drop, especially because we have to buy gifts for the Christmas parties! No wonder why malls are always jump-packed on Christmas time.
Anyway, since I'm working for a private outsourcing company now, and they are definitely going to have a party by next week, I am included in the event also. It came as a shock since I'm a newbie. It's actually okay with me if I won't join. Personally knowing only one person who was a college classmate, I don't have any idea who my manito is. I bought a tumbler for him. It's a medium-sized, transparent but heavily tinted with dark blue kind. I hope he will appreciate it. Because I do. :)
Then, after a few rounds of discussion and meetings, everyone decided that the party venue will be somewhere in Aurora. The place is owned by a workmate's sis-in-law so we can actually avail of a discount. There's gonna be a lot of beers and drinking, and as observed, I know the workmates are gonna drink as much as they can. So I know I'll exit early since it's never my trip to 'tagay' and besides, I'm not yet comfortable with them. It will surely take some time. :)
Whew. I just realized that I am anxious. I guess Christmas will also be the time to get to know these people better. I just hope everything will turn out well so that I can find spending time with them as fun. :)
Merry Christmas in advance, Ultro people! :D

NSO nostalgia. Still.
Days before my NSO contract is about to end, I couldn't contain my excitement with the thought of getting all the rest I claim to deserve. I looked forward to complete eight-hour (or more!) slumber, chance to catch up on movies I downloaded centuries ago but remained unwatched, read books, make my room spic-and-span and fix whatever is in need of fixing. Try a new sport or hobby. Spend time with my closest friends who I always disappoint by my MIA (missing in action) status and family who barely feel my presence.Life after NSO is dedicated to relaxation only. :)
But when it finally happened, there was definitely a change of heart and mind. I put the blame on the ongoing repair/repainting of our house. Imagine waking up to the sound of hammers pounding on the rooftop and having to endure the sickening smell of newly-painted walls almost everywhere. It's enough to ruin a day.
To add to that, I really really really miss my NSO friends. Seems like everyone has not yet gotten over with the fact that NSO is already a closed chapter. We still keep on hanging out with each other and call it 'farewell party' but would you call such when you do it over and over again? I guess we never really learned to say goodbye. LOL.
I know I have to let them go. We have our own lives to face, own battles to fight for, own victories to claim. And we'll definitely keep in touch with each other. Rest assured, we'll be friends. Til the end. :)

N-S-Oh! :D but :(
Three months is all that it takes to change lives. :)
Who would ever forget the first day of training in NSO? New faces, calculated actions, awkward exchange of hi's and hello's. Everyone seems to let the fact that work is finally right here, right now sink in to each one's system.
Who wouldn't remember the Bangus lunch from Chowking that we devoured during that first lunch? Or how each one made an effort to report to the office clad in collared blouses/polo shirts?
What about Ma'am Lea's infectious laughter (which made us somehow comfortable with her around even if we know she's a high rank official ), Sir Ronan's seemingly superior character that threatened us (which fortunately was just a front. Truth is, he's cool. Well, that's how the first shift described him.), Ma'am Jen's soft way of speaking and Ma'am Apple's many 'hang' moments. :))
And of course, there were also our LOL moments. Remember Rod's punching in at the wrong side of the time card? And Merbien's one hour late during the second day? Most especially, the epic question Princess asked that went like this "Kung maguba ang scanner, kami ang mubayad?" followed by her zesty laughter that made everyone of us laugh along and notice her.
With free meals for three days, we all wanted to be trainees forever. We found that painstakingly counting each form in each EA as taxing. Likewise, we dread operating the SCIPS and handling the scanners since we were intimidated by its costly price (think: 1.3 M for Kodak and 700K for Panasonic! Wow. Yaman ng NSO!!) But work life had to start. So even if the work sched is totally not normal (6am-2pm, 3pm-11pm), we reported to duty inspired by the higher-than-average daily rate(confidential! But, yes, pwede na 'panawid-luho' hahaha). :))
Days passed and as if by magic, we all got along very well. All we gotta do is feed the scanners with the numerous forms, click those right buttons, and voila! We can all go back to our 'chika' and 'sungogay' moments. Blame it on the not-so-challenging-and-definitely-not-brain-stimulating nature of job we had! :))
We act out like kids from high school even if we are all professionals already. We talk about things that I never imagined myself getting into any similar conversation until I met all of you. We are so eager to hang out with each other and eat out as soon as we get hold of our most-awaited salary!
We laughed out so loud, we didn't give a damn if we were too noisy unless Ma'am Adie reprimands us :)), we were just soooo into this friendship that's incredibly strong even if it only started just recently. We also had our share of bullying each other, making fun out of one's funny mistake (usually Merbien's slip of tongue which I and Lorie are so fond of teasing him about it), and yeah, even misunderstandings. A few also developed special feelings for some. Oh yeah, it's just really like in high school! :))
We went to places I didn't even think I can go to(Mandug,Magsaysay Park,Jack's Ridge, the new Voyzout branch, Kaputian and Isla Reta in Samal)or go back again and again (People's Park, GMall, GS elevator)if it weren't for all of you.
Our bond strengthened this friendship and the level of attachment we felt for each other really made us care for each one as a brother or sister. That's why we let out our full support when one of us decides to take the brighter path towards career growth (Rod's resignation for Megavia, Brgy. Kgwd. Julaysa's political career). Also, we are saddened when one of us gets into a predicament and tries our best to help out. I guess we owe it to the fact that we are literally always together. 8 hours duty for 6 days a week and even beyond.
And now that the contract plus the two weeks extension has finally came to an inevitable end, we all have to go on our separate ways and work out our lives. We have to once again kiss hello our resume editing sessions, job searching and anticipating a call or text from companies where we tried our luck to be a part of. In our next job, things may get a whole lot of serious so let's all cherish the memories NSO offer us. It's the only place where I felt as if school just had an extension. :))
We all knew this is gonna happen, considering we are only contractual employees.I was so used to being with all of you almost everyday and knowing everything's gonna be different makes me feel way, way sadder. :( Of course, we won't totally lose contact. What's the use of SMSing and FB, right? But then, it wouldn't still feel the same. :( The amount of time and fun we shared make it really, really hard not to miss US. For a short period of time, we've been friends and I know, in our heart of hearts, we'll always be. :)
So here's a compilation of my favorite group pictures we have. Just looking at these makes my heart go awwwww. I'll miss you, NSO Shift 2 Scanners. More than words can ever say. :(
1st picture2x ever! :)

SMART makes me smart. :)
I tire of receiving text messages from network providers saying that for loading, I get free points and a chance to win prizes and all that. But lately, Smart lives to its word of being 'simply amazing'!
They keep on sending random trivia (usually about Hollywood big names)for subscribers who get their cellphone loaded.
Here are some (though not in exact words):
1. Lady Gaga is an aristocrat and she even went to the same school as Paris Hilton.
2. The Beatles' album is still the best-selling album of all times in Hollywood.
3. Neyo has Chinese blood.
*Mmmkay, so the info are not really complete, but this post is just for update and to show my appreciation for Smart's new ways of making their subscribers smart. Simply amazing! I'm glad to be using my Smart Buddy sim again. :)*

HOW WE ARE AS NOVICE CAREER PEOPLE?
Jeff, a former classmate and a good friend of mine sent me a text message earlier asking me if I can join him and some of our former classmates (Lloyd, Camz and Kring)to watch a movie. After all, he would be the one to treat us. Oh, talk about earning already! :D
I also had another agenda so I went to downtown and join them. Little did I know that they came from an Ukay2x spree to shop for business attires that Kring would be using for her 6-8 month training in BPI Makati. Wow, surely her cum lau de status when she graduated paid off! Kring's bag was full with her good finds and there were also bags containing the shoes and some more clothes she will also be using during her training.
Since the movie will start at 4:30pm and I arrived minutes before it, we still had the time to chat and talk about what's happening in our career. Aside from Jeff who is now earning from his web development job and has the money to treat his friends now, the others are also finding their place in the real world. Lloyd should now be called Sir Lloyd, being a CS Division teacher in our alma matter. Camz has already worked as a PCOS technician during the election and is currently searching for a work. And on June 30, Kring will be setting foot to Manila to undergo the BPI training.
As for me, I am starting out with my first online freelance writing job this Monday (thanks to Jeff!). I am hopeful that I can really feel 'employed' and be of service to the company I'm working for.
Time flies really, really fast. It's definitely the start of the real battle in which we spent our more or less 16 years of existence to get ready for it.
I can still remember the days when I went out with almost the same people to watch a movie since we were so stressed out after exams. Now, there's no academic exam to take. What's here is employment. There's no longer a desire for high grades, only high salary.
But what's constant is the insatiable hunger for learning we possess. Every day is filled with lots of lessons to gain. And although we are no longer wearing our college uniforms, we will forever remain Ateneans by heart even outside school -- full of magis and striving to be the paramount persons we can be.

LIFE AFTER AdDU
After being left behind by our batch mates when they graduated last March 20, me and my group mates then knew that we have to continue living our lives as students and pass our two remaining subjects (Practicum 2 and Philosophy of Religion) to also graduate in six weeks time.
We worked our butts off just so we can finish college with flying colors (haha. this one's exaggeration, i know. we're not lau de's of some sort but still, thank God for the passing grade!).
Philo 106 demands time for us to read every single line in the article. So I really did my part. :)
In Business Plan, which is our only remaining major subject so we had to request for tutorial (automatically, +60% in our tuition fee!), we exerted all our efforts to do field research on existing competitors, compute all possible expenses, estimate our inventory, project our income and do accounting to balance the Balance Sheet. T.T
We really took the subject seriously and come defense day, we did present the business plan just like pros do.
And after that, tadaaaa! College life is finally over. Yes, after eight regular semesters and four summer classes, we find ourselves bidding good bye to the University that created such huge impact in our lives.
Now, a week and a day after 'graduating' (the marching rites will be on March 2011 so there was not yet any feast or celebration here at home) and unemployed, things have been slowly sinking in.
I wake up in the morning with no classes to attend to. I have so many time in my hands. I can now spend my afternoons by having my much-desired siesta way back school days. I can now watch teleseryes and afternoon series and be amazed how I like watching Impostor partly because Maja's character is also named Maris. hahaha! Epic win!!
Also, I now think of employment (waaah!!). As much as I would want to chillax because I claim I need it after being so stressed out during my last year in college (3rd yr and 4th yr majors + ATENEWS EICship!!), still, I can't help but think the real reason why I went to AdDU to get my tertiary education -- to land on a high-paying and brain-stimulating job!!
For now, I'm out in the open, looking for a job that would suit me. And hopeful that all of my efforts spent in school would eventually pay off as I claim my place in the real world.
:D
P.S. Now, I can say that I have every right to post this picture! :)
